Hrafnista – continuing care communites

The first Hrafnista home opened in Reykjavík in 1957, followed by Hrafnista in Hafnarfjörður two decades later, in 1977. The latest addition to the group, in Kópavogur, opened in March 2010.

The homes are run by the ‘Seamen’s Day Council’, an organisation drawn from seamen’s societies in Reykjavík and other municipalities in the metropolitan area. Originally, the Hrafnista homes were intended for retired seamen and their widows, but they are now open to all who need residential or nursing-home facilities in their old age.

Hrafnista makes a priority of high-quality nursing and medical care, rehabilitation and varied social activities.

Hrafnista’s guiding principle is to uphold the right of those in its care to control their own affairs and choose how much they participate in the activities in the homes, the aim being to combine the best elements of life in one’s own premises and the security of a nursing home.

One of Hrafnista’s main goals is to be a leader in the provision of services and care for the elderly, and it has systematically developed facilities to cover most degrees of need and service requirements, the aim being to ensure quality of life.

More than 500 recipients of care and others live in the homes, and a further 300-400 individuals living in the vicinity make use of Hrafnista’s services on a daily basis.

Services at the Hrafnista homes include 24-hour nursing and medical care, placement for rest and rehabilitation, recreational day center, day training center,   physiotherapy, occupational therapy, varied social activities, swimming pools, hairdressing and podiatry facilities, shops and pastoral care.

Hrafnista’s 800 employees make every effort to provide focussed, quality service so that the people entrusted to them will feel comfortable and happy.  Cheerfulness, satisfaction and sincerity are qualities that we want to cultivate and uphold in our services and our approach; we believe that they make a valuable contribution to the mental, social and physical well-being of the old people in our care.
